Beatrice and Jean-Paul, organic sheep farmers, welcome you to their farm home in the Ardèche. This spacious and welcoming accommodation is located in the middle of 30 hectares of forest and pastureland. The stone country house has been renovated by the owners using ecological materials.
As of 2021, their son Mathias, a young 37-year-old organic winemaker, will officially settle on the estate to produce and market natural wine.
The independent accommodation adjacent to the owners’ home is opposite the barn, so you could experience the daily life of the sheep farmers up close. You are welcome to visit the flock when the animals are inside.
The cottage has a large living room, including a sitting room with a beautiful fireplace, a well-equipped kitchen, a separate toilet and bathroom, and 3 bedrooms upstairs.
In nice weather, the covered terrace invites you to linger. From here, at breakfast or aperitif, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the mountains of the Ardèche. A sunny terrace is available on the east side.
The farm is located at the end of a road with hardly any traffic. Your children can therefore safely run around on the 300m² private property in front of the guesthouse and enjoy the wide green spaces. There you can also conveniently park your car to enjoy your vacation car-free in France.
Organic sheep breeding
In a pastoral system, the hundred or so ewes grazing in the surrounding meadows, moors and chestnut groves contribute to protecting biodiversity, keeping the landscape open, passable for hikers and less vulnerable to fires. The sound of bells is also part of the landscape.
The breed of ewe (Roussillon Reds) was chosen for its hardiness. They are part of an association that works to rehabilitate several breeds of sheep in the south of France and they are committed to helping preserve these breeds forgotten by productivism.
Ecocert certified *, Jean-Paul and Béatrice offer for sale *lamb meat (according to slaughter dates and available stock).
On request, you can also taste the organic vegetables from the garden that Beatrice cultivates with love. .
Beatrice and Jean-Paul used environmentally-friendly materials such as local stones, bricks, wood, and natural lime. They chose to insulate their walls with hemp, a plant known for being ecologically grown and for its powerful insulating property. The owners also installed solar panels on the roofs, so that the house is completely self-sufficient in hot water. All the taps have water-saving devices. As for electricity, the whole house is equipped with energy-saving lightbulbs and Class A electric appliances. Maintenance products are ecologically-friendly. And to complete their green approach, waste is sorted out and food leftovers composted.
The gîte is located on the outskirts of the little village of Désaignes at an altitude of 650m (2132 feet) in the upper Doux Valley. It is 7km away from Lamastre, between the Rhône River and Ardèche mountains. This gîte is made for whoever loves nature and a simple lifestyle. In a hilly setting whick makes for countless picturesque rides and walks, it is also an hour’s drive from scenic highlights from the department’s capital, Valence, and scenic highlights such as Mount Gerbier-de-Jonc.
