Let’s go on a holiday where eco-friendly meets comfort. Esther and Merel’s 4-star guesthouse in the rugged west of Ireland combines a holiday in nature with fine organic dining.
The Eco House has 9 en suite bedrooms, 6 double/twins, a triple room, a family room and the bridal suite, all with a cot option. The rooms have Moroccan influences, each different with unique hand-painted furnishings, cosy beds, most boasting balconies overlooking the grounds. There are no televisions or coffee/tea stations in the rooms to encourage guests to relax and explore the outdoors.
Stop by the Organic Kitchen, a certified organic restaurant, which serves 3 meals each day and offers a cafe menu throughout the day on weekends and holidays. The bar operates on an honour system. You can enjoy the company of others while trying the organic wines, beers, spirits and a selection of non-alcoholic beverages.
Finally, the two eco-lodges, also with a cot option, offer simple comfort with wood burning stoves and an open floor plan kitchen and living area. The Birds n Bees lodge has one bedroom and an inviting timber deck, while the Chalet de Florence has an upstairs loft bedroom and a main floor bedroom with a set of bunk beds.
Esther and Merel also have a glamping cabin for you to check out.
Owners Esther and Merel Zyderlaan are eco-conscious without sacrificing comfort.
The centre began in the 1980’s with the vision of becoming a place where people could immerse themselves in nature and live sustainably.
The building maintains the highest energy efficient standards, with eco-foam insulation, low energy lighting and sanitary facilities. For instance, wastewater is treated on site in a natural puraflo peat moss treatment system. The land and cleaning on the estate is chemical free. The original materials of the building were used to restore the structure and build the restaurant.
The restaurant is one of only 2 in all of Ireland to have earned organic certification. Two acres of ground is also certified organic garden – all of the harvest is used in the restaurant. Try the delicious organic pizza and homemade, oven, baked breads. Newly-weds will savour organic salmon from the clay oven.
Nothing goes to waste here! Guests will find re-useable drinking bottles in their room. Food scraps either feed Eileen’s pot-bellied pigs diet or the compost heap. Compost stuff and horse manure is mixed to fertilise the grazing fields and gardens. Broken tiles become artistic facets if they are not recycled. Rainwater is harvested for use in the garden and stables.
The centre is proud to support CELT (the Centre for Environmental Living and Teaching). This organization holds 2 weekends of traditional skills workshops each year hosted by the centre.
Set on 35 acres of rolling farmland, the center is an escape to the tranquility and beauty of the natural world. With warm natural light, a spacious interior and lots of curves, the Eco House and Organic Kitchen is a stunning retreat in this area. The adjacent 2,000 acres of state forestry is a mix of plantation forest, native forest, river zones, and stone remains from villages of long ago. The centre has marked 4 self-guided trails that bring you to unique parts of the forest including rivers, native woodlands, and celtic ruins. The land has an abundance of deer, birds, endangered red squirrel, pine martin, fox and more and the centre has an area of special conservation for the hen harrier.
Nearby, the village of Ballinakill is home to the Burke mansion known as Marble Hill House. An excellent example of the aftermath of English rule and conflict, this ruin has a colourful history as well as standing remains of the main house, stables, church, courtyard and ice house. Travel a bit further to Portumna and Portumna Castle and Gardens on Lough Derg makes for a lovely day out. While you are there the Portumna Workhouse is worth a visit as the only remaining example of these famine time shelters, and the fishing on the lake is very good.
The city of Galway is a highlight with its cobblestone shopping street, numerous pubs, and proximity to the sea. From Galway head south for the infamous Cliffs of Moher, or north to reach the wild and scenic Connemara landscape.
