Anna and Andrew, originally from Great Britain, fell in love with the quietness and untouched nature of the Millevaches plateau, located in the Limousin region.
They bought and renovated themselves an old barn in 2012 and since then have been thoughtfully converting it from a cow shed to their home and a “gîte” (guesthouse).
The spacious gîte nestles in one end of their beautifully converted granite barn, offering double height open plan living space, kitchen, two bedrooms and two bathrooms. This place is flooded with light. Bi-fold doors open directly onto the west-facing terrace (35 m²), which overlooks the fields and woods to the hills beyond.
Th landscape of the natural park with its forests, rivers and lakes are a complete antidote to busy lives.
The couple is running an environment-friendly life and so its aim was to convert the barn as sympathetically as possible, keeping as much of its character and originality. They thus have saved a beautiful part of the heritage of the French agricultural history. They have used traditional materials wherever possible, combined with some use of modern technical materials to reduce the long term impact they have on the environment.
The granite and old oak from the barn has been re-purposed and locally sourced green oak used for all the new structural work. Like the original builders they have utilised lime-based materials for the floors, the internal walls and for all the joints. An ancient method using hemp and lime mixture provides insulation as this ‘breathes’ and lets moisture move in and out of the walls and floors.
Besides this, the place is as environmentally friendly as possible. The barn is south facing and partially subterranean. This conserves heat in the winter and maintains a cooler environment in summer. No need of air conditioning! Insulation is optimal thanks to doubleglazing throughout and triple glazing on the Veluxes. Solar panels and a huge wood boiler power the heating and hot water. The logs for this come from their own woods.
For the interiors, the owners also conducted an environmental friendly policy such as: bathroom taps with flow limiters, LED bulbs, fixtures and fittings made in Europe and of high quality, second hand furniture, A or A+ rated appliances, etc.
Their ‘potager’ and polytunnel provide them with seasonal vegetables all year round. Everything biodegradable is composted. They recycle and use eco-friendly products where possible. The delicious un-chlorinated water comes straight from the local spring.
The newly converted granite barn is set in 16 hectares of their own pasture and secluded woodlands offering a tranquil retreat and a haven for wildlife. The gîte garden leads into this field. You are welcome to walk through the fields and into the woods. These consist of pine trees and mixed broadleaved; ancient chestnuts, beech, oak and hazel.
The couple has a dog, geese and chickens but no livestock. If you visit in the autumn you can forage for mushrooms. Marked paths meander around the woods. The public ‘chemin’ (like a bridleway in the UK) leads from their hamlet down to Lac de Bariousses.
The Wi-Fi is limited. Enough to check emails or look at the Internet but not enough to ‘download or upload’! What about enjoying a digital detox?
There is ample parking for two large cars. This part of Corrèze (Haute Corrèze) and in particular the Millevaches Plateau is very rural and sparsely populated. Please be aware that there is no regular public transport.
Treignac, ten minutes by car has a good supermarket (including fuel) two butchers and two boulangeries as well as Cafes, a chocolate shop and the Tourist Information. It is a beautiful medieval village and well worth a visit. There is a wider selection of shops at Eymoutiers twenty minutes away
There is also a smal local market in Treignac on Tuesday morning in summer and on Thursday and Saturday mornings in Eymoutiers all year round.
There are local maps to borrow and lists of suggested places to visit. Anna is very happy to offer advice if you want to do, or see something specific.
Situated in the undiscovered region of Corrèze on the western edge of the Massif Central in France the gîte is surrounded by the rivers, lakes and forests of the ‘Parc naturel régional de Millevaches en Limousin’.
The wild open spaces of the high Millevaches plateau are the source of the River Vezere, which winds through deep wooded gorges of gnarled oaks to join Lac de Barriouses only a kilometre from there.
Traversed by a huge network of pathways the moorlands, meadows, woodlands and rivers remain unspoilt. This stunning undulating landscape, with warm lakes, miles of empty roads and paths is perfect for a relaxing or more active outdoor holiday.
Available for self-catering all year round.
Anna and Andrew also offer bespoke holidays, for individuals, small groups or families of all ages and abilities. They take the hard work out of the planning and logistics of combining opportunities to swim, bike, run and or hike. Stay in the gîte with the choice of catering options.
